Tom's Drop is from O'Donohoe's Vineyard on the edge of the Australian Outback near Berri in South Australia. We farm this vine garden with a rigid philosophy of minimal intervention, letting nature have her way. There is no tillage, no herbicide, no insecticide and irrigation is kept to a minimum, ensuring our yeilds never surpas two tonnes per acre. The vineyard has been certified as Level A Organic since 1991. All our harvesting is done by hand. Our fruit is put through a tiny crusher, ferments in open fermenters with wild yeast, and is gently basket pressed to give a rich, fruity and full bodied dry wine. Tom's Drop is perfect with hearty meat dishes.
That's my grandfather Tom holding Casey, his dog, with his six brothers at Menzies on the Australian goldfields in 1896. Full of irrepressible faith and optimisim, they sponsored their gold prospecting by selling fresh drinking water which they made from salty bore water in this still. We make our wine here on the edge of the desert with the same pure spirit of enthusiasm.
MICHAEL O'Donohoe made this marvel by hand at Berri. The mulchcovered soil below these vines has not been disturbed for 23 years, and the vineyard was certified organic in 1990. Irrigation is sparse, keeping yields below 2 tonnes/acre, so the glorious flavour is an exponential reversal of all that restriction: intense, healthy, soft, rich, ripe and delicious - the best red I've had from the Riverland.
